Term 3

It is hard to believe we are in our final term of Primary 5!

Literacy:

In the final term of P5, we will continue to develop our use of spoken and written grammar. This will include the use of direct and reported speech, connectives, homophones and prefixes, as well as general revision. We will continue to display our knowledge of these features in written work, including 'Improving Together' passages, where the children will have to correct mistakes that they see within the writing.

In Creative writing we will be looking at instructional writing. The children will be learning about the key features and will be writing some instructions of their own, involving a science experiment linked to our WAU topic. The children have produced some lovely pieces of creative writing this year and are developing their ability to present work appropriately and use the correct language for the type of writing that they are completing. As we continue to improve our grammar, this should be reflected in the children's writing where they will produce stories and poems as well as instructions.

The children are continuing to make good progress in their use of joined handwriting. We will keep focusing on this during our handwriting lessons and in particular letters that are commonly causing mistakes. Please support the teachers by ensuring that the high standard of handwriting and presentation is maintained in their homework.

As we have progressed through reading skills and comprehension work there have been pleasing developments.  In our final term, we are going to build on the children’s reading and comprehension skills. One of the main comprehension skills that we will work on is the children’s inference skills. Along with this we will use traditional methods of comprehension. The Accelerated Reader programme continues to be used every day and the benefits to the children in P5 are obvious. It is important that the children keep reading and, when possible, are questioned at home on what they have read to confirm understanding.

Numeracy:

Please continue to revise times table facts and number bonds with your child as this will make a great impact on their work and will help them in other areas of numeracy.

Added to this, we will be working on angles, 3D shapes, area and perimeter, money, time, weight and probability.

With the progress in tables and the use of multiplication the children will be able to explore how to solve problems for all four functions, with the emphasis being on recognising key vocabulary in questions and subsequently being able to carry out the correct calculations.

World Around Us:

Our World Around Us theme for this term is ‘Blowing Yer Top.’  This theme will help the children’s understanding of volcanoes and how to deal with anger. They will learn about the layers of the Earth, how volcanoes are formed and the movement of tectonic plates. We will move on to looking at the cross-section of a volcano and how volcanoes erupt. The children will be carrying out a science experiment on creating a volcanic eruption and this will be linked to our creative writing. The children will also be researching the advantages and disadvantages of living near volcanoes. They will develop their ICT skills by creating a PowerPoint in this area.

This term the children will be completing their end of year exams in May. Please revise any topics that your child has learnt this year.
