Learning Support (Numeracy)

Welcome to Numeracy support which has a lovely refurbished room where the P5,P6 and P7 groups are able to work  without distractions.

The normal daily routine for each group is as follows:

  • check homework diaries
  • daily tables test
  • mental maths activities
  • the same topic work that is being taught by the class teacher.


P7 have been working on the following topics:

  • Area and Perimeter.
  • Simplifying fractions.
  • Mixed number and improper fractions.
  • Decimals and percentages.

We are currently working on a percentage of an amount.

P6 have been working on the following topics:

  • Multiples and factors.
  • Function machines.
  • Angles.

We are currently working on recognising regular 2D shapes using the length of sides and angles.

P5 have been working on the following topics:

  • Division of 2 digit numbers with and without remainders.
  • Fractions of a shape
  • Equivalent fractions using a fraction board.

We are currently working on fractions of an amount.


P7 continue to work on reading scales and converting kilograms to grams and vice versa. They completed a weight investigation which required them to weigh the items accurately and work out the postage cost.  They also have been working on long multiplication. Please keep helping them with their tables.

P6 are working on fractions. They have completed fractions of a shape and equivalent fractions.  They will now focus on a fraction of a number. 

P5 have continued with sorting data using Venn and Carroll diagrams.  We are currently working on money, making amounts above £1 but less than £5 and calculating change from whole pounds.

We are using two methods:

1.  counting on.

2.  setting out in a sum and subtracting.  

Once  a week we visit the computer room to work on a program called ‘Maths for schools.’  This is a valuable tool to recognise where each child’s strengths lie and what areas need further support. Education City is another resource that will be introduced next term.

 We are using the mnemonic "RUDE" to follow the steps that enable all pupils to select the important information needed to solve a problem.

R- read the question carefully.

U – underline the important numbers and words.

D- decide, do we add or subtract?

E- execute. Set out the sum and work out the answer.

Please use opportunities at home to reinforce these steps.

 All withdrawal groups are currently working on problem solving strategies.

P7 are moving on to apply the strategies they have learnt to a Post Office investigation where they will be estimating and weighing  with increasing accuracy. If you have scales at home please encourage them to practice estimating and weighing different items.


P6 are working on division and will be applying the RUDE strategy described above to solve word problems.

P5 are currently working on different ways to sort and display data.
