Learning Support (Numeracy)

Welcome to Numeracy support which has a lovely refurbished room where the P5,P6 and P7 groups are able to work  without distractions.

The normal daily routine for each group is as follows.

  • -check homework diaries
  • -daily tables test
  • -mental math’s activities
  • -the same topic work that is being taught by the class teacher..

Once  a week we visit the computer room to work on a program called ‘maths for schools.’  This is a valuable tool to recognise where each child’s strengths lie and what areas need further support. Education city is another resource that will be introduced next term.

 We are using the mnemonic Rude to follow the steps that enable  all pupils to select the important information needed to solve a problem.

r- read the question carefully.

u – underline the important numbers and words.

d- decide, do we add or subtract?

e- execute. Set out the sum and work out the answer.

Please use opportunities at home to reinforce these steps.

DECEMBER

 

All Withdrawal groups are currently working on problem solving strategies.

P7 are moving on to apply the strategies they have learnt to a Post Office investigation where they will be estimating and weighing  with increasing accuracy. If You have scales at home please encourage them to practice estimating and weighing different items.

 

P6 are working on division and will be applying the RUDE strategy described above to solve word problems.

 

P5 are currently working on different ways to sort and display data.
