Football Senior Cup

22nd Feb 2018

On Thursday 22nd February, Ballykeel's senior team travelled to the Ballymena Showgrounds for the qualifying round of the Schools' Senior Cup.  Three other schools were represented: Ballymena PS, Camphill PS and Portglenone PS.

Match 1 was against Ballymena and after a bright start, Ballymena took the lead.  The lead lasted until the closing minutes, with chances few and far between, before Ballykeel scored a deserved equaliser through captain Zack Fleming.  Result: 1-1

In match 2 against Camphill it was Ballykeel who started the brighter and took an early lead, again through a Zack Fleming goal.  While pressing for the second goal, Camphill's defence stood firm and in the closing seconds they took advantage of a loose ball in the Ballykeel box and snatched an equaliser.  Result: 1-1

Match 3 was against Portglenone and despite having much of the possession, chances were few and far between thanks to firm defending by Portglenone.  The breakthrough came midway through the game, with Calvin Termonia keeping a cool head and curling a shot past the keeper.  The contest was put to rest following great passing and teamwork from a corner.  Finding the ball at her feet, Steph Mark placed her shot past the keeper.  Result: 2-0

With the games finished, it was found that Ballymena and Ballykeel both finished on 5 points with 2 draws and a win apiece.  Looking at the goals scored and conceded, it was Ballykeel who finished first in the group  with a goal difference of +2 to Ballymena's +1.  The finals will be played in the coming weeks.

Well done to each player who took part today!
