Literacy Support September 2018

27th Aug 2018

Welcome back. I hope you all enjoyed your Summer holidays and are ready for another busy term ahead!

Below is an outline of just some of the topics and activities which will be covered in each year group (P2-P4) but please do 'check in' regularly to look at the pupils at work.

Primary 2

Each night (Mon-Thurs)your child will get reading. Take time to practise new words and look out for capital letters and full stops. Please ask your child to find different words from the story and ask some questions too. Don't forget to check and sign the reading record every night- this is a great place for us to communicate how they are getting on.

You will also get games and activities sent home from time to time to help reinforce what they have been doing during class. The children love doing these and it's a great way to keep learning 'fun'.

Primary 3

Spellings will be written daily in class (Mon-Wed). These should be copied each night and learned. Please use the Look-say-cover-write-check method. It is best to spend some time learning every night and use Thursday night to revise for the Friday test.

Reading homework will be given Monday-Thursday. Please spend time talking to your child about the story and ask some questions.

Literacy written homework will be given out every Monday. This will be linked to classwork being completed and will reinforce new skills. Please sign each homework when completed.

Our classwork will link into the theme 'Home Sweet Home' and the children will have lots of opportunities for talking, listening, reading and writing about home- what materials are needed; what makes a home;different types of houses..... hopefully there will be lots of photos for you to see so please keep checking the website.

Primary 4

The theme this term is 'Hey, hey, look at me!' There will be lots of opportunities for the children to be writing about their summer holidays, hobbies, what they like doing, among other things!

Written literacy homework will be given either once or twice each week and will sometimes link to the theme. Other times it will help to consolidate what has been taught in class. All homework will be written into the diary so please check this daily and sign when completed fully. Spellings are to copied and learned each night for the daily test. There will be a 'big' test each Friday and a selection of 10 spellings will be asked. Don't forget Mrs Sheeran's '4-in-a-row' prize!

Reading homework is given daily- please take time to ask your child questions and help them to read with fluency and make sense of the story. Why not ask them to find examples of nouns/verbs/questions or maybe get them to ask you some questions!

Always remember- Time spent with your child is Time Well Spent.

Please check your child's class page as a reminder of what is needed for school each day and to find out more about what is going on.

I hope you all enjoy the photos which will follow as soon as the pupils get back to school.
