Miss Galloway's P1KM Mad 4 Maths group

23rd Apr 2018

Primary 1 enjoyed making numbers from play doh today.  They also had their 2D shape knowledge reinforced by playing a shape game involving carpet tiles.  They firstly revised the names of the shapes and their properties.  Then they were instructed to stand on a specific shape and gradually they moved around the room until they had stood on each of the 2D shapes - circle, square, rectangle and triangle.  Finally, the boys and girls were allowed to choose any shape they wanted to stand on but they had to be able to provide the name of the shape.  On the whole P1 were very good at recognising their 2D shapes.  The game progressed to the properties of the shapes and children were asked to stand on a shape with 3 sides or 4 corners or a shape with a curved side or straight sides.  During day 2 of Mad 4 Maths Primary 1 played a roll and write game which Miss Galloway adapted slightly.  The children played in pairs and were give a large dice with pictures of numicon on it, a game board and magnetic numbers.  Player 1 had to roll the dice and look at the picture of the piece of numicon to determine the number represented.  Then the children had to search through the magnetic numbers to find the number they needed.  When they got the number the children left it on the board game and kept rolling to see which number won the race to the top.  Primary 1 are very good at recognising their numbers.  The highlight of the day was when we were counting and Miss Galloway had the hiccups.  When Miss Galloway was counting some of the numbers were missing but Primary 1 were brilliant at identifying the missing numbers.
