Ballykeel 7-a-side Football tournament
On Thursday 16th March the school 7-a-side football team travelled to Wakehurst MUGA to take part in the Finals of the Ballymena and District 7-a-side football tournament. The team made it to the Finals via a qualifying round which was held at Kells MUGA on 17th November 2016. The weather was typically spring-like, with gusty winds, passing (heavy!) showers and of course bright sunshine throughout.
Ballykeel’s first match was against Buick. The crosswind made it difficult for both teams throughout the match and it finished in stalemate – 0-0. The second match was against Camphill, who started very brightly and had several chances to go ahead early on. Indeed, Camphill took the lead late in the first half. The second half saw a revitalised Ballykeel side, who worked hard to get back into the game with a close-range strike from Zach Fleming. With the game hanging in the balance it was Ballykeel who struck again through the ever-ready Zach Fleming and the match was won 2-1.
Match 3 was against Fourtowns; keeping possession and playing passing football was made difficult due to the driving rain and sharp wind which struck without warning. Fourtowns scored the only goal of the match in the second half and defended their lead well to the final whistle. With a Camphill victory over Buick, Camphill took the cup and Ballykeel finished as Runners-Up in what was yet another tightly contested tournament.
