Environmental review (part 1) and zero food miles apple crumbles

17th Oct 2019

Today we started our Eco school environmental review by looking at our school's biodiversity. We started filling in our questionnaires and had to interview the caretaker. We asked him whether the school uses peat free compost and whether we are a herbicide and pesticides free school.

We found out that the answers to both questions is no!! Our compost contains peat (and is actually 100% peat) and the company in charge of looking after the school grounds uses weed killer.

So we will use our findings to inform our action plan. We can easily improve the compost issue.

We took a break from the review and went to the canteen where we ate delicious apple crumbles made by our school chef, Mrs Bradley. She used the apples we gathered last week!

Finally, we went round the school to check the state our current biodiversity elements: bird boxes, bat boxes, log pile, stone pile, minibeast hotel, pond etc. We saw that some are in need of a little TLC.

Next week we will continue working our way through the environmental review.
