P5s make Christmas decorations from Salt Dough!
P5 AR were asked to demonstrate a science activity during Thursday's Open Morning. We decided to make salt dough Christmas decorations. As we mixed the ingredients we talked about the changes and the consistency of the dough. What should we add if the dough was sticky? What should we add if the dough was too dry? We also added white paint to the dough as we were kneading it. What would happen if we left the decorations to sit out over night? We had lots of fun as we created our decorations!
Here's the recipe for salt dough if you would like to try some at home.
2 Cups Flour + Extra for stickiness
1 Cup Salt
1 Cup Lukewarm Water
White Paint – Acrylic or whatever you have on hand
In a large bowl mix 2 cups of flour & 1 cup of salt. Then slowly mix in the lukewarm water until a dough-like consistency forms.
Too wet? Add more flour! Too dry? Add more water!
Knead for 15-30 seconds to create a nice ball of dough.
Then slowly add white paint, kneading it in with flour (as needed), until it is the colour you like.
