P6 - Term 1
What's happening in Term 1?
World Around Us
Our World Around Us topic this term is ‘Unsinkable’ and will focus on the amazing story of the Titanic, as well as related themes. We are learning about where and when the Titanic was built, and about what life was like back then. Using our summarising, questioning and inferring skills, we will investigate the timeline of events that led up to the Titanic’s sinking, using ICT sources and books to research information about passengers on board and where the ship sank. We will use this information to create our own Titanic fact files as well as to take part in a hot-seat activity. In art, we will create our own Titanic advertisement poster as well as a disaster scene showing the sinking of the Titanic. We will also carry out scientific experiments to find out more about ice bergs.
Language and Literacy
Comprehension work allows us to improve our understanding of the things we read. In our comprehension work we will be learning how to clarify - or work out what unfamiliar words or phrases mean - in our reading books, library books and in other pieces of text we read in school. We will also be learning how to summarise pieces of text to capture the main idea. In our grammar work, we will be studying the different types of nouns, verbs and adjectives we use in everyday speech. We’ll be learning how to correct common grammar and punctuation errors within pieces of writing.
Mathematics and Numeracy
In Numeracy we will be concentrating on quick times table recall and developing mental maths skills. We will also be focusing on the place value of really big numbers as well as how to order, sequence and round these numbers. We will be measuring using all kinds of measuring equipment to enable greater accuracy when measuring small (and not so small!) things. We will focus on problem-solving strategies involving the four mathematical functions that will enable us to work out solutions to everyday problems.
