What’s happening this term?
Term 1
Our World Around Us theme for this term will be ‘Hunger’ . We will be examining and researching what life was like in the 1800s during the Irish Famine, and the consequences of famine. We will also look at what caused the famine, and try to empathise with the people of the time through drama, writing and art. We will be reading Under the Hawthorn Tree which will give us a real idea of what the people of Ireland went through. We will also think about how we can be hungry for things other than food e.g. peace, justice, freedom. Throughout the term we will also be creating e-books and using these as ‘learning logs’ to showcase what we have found out about our theme.
In Literacy we will be revising nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and aspects of punctuation. We will also be carrying out writing activities based on our class novel - diary entries, story boards and character studies.
In Numeracy we will be concentrating on place value, rounding, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also be looking about problem solving strategies and working on word problems. We will be measuring heights and using the computer to draw graphs showing the results; and we will measure weights using a variety of scales and calculating prices based on these measurements.
