P7G - Area & Perimeter Investigations

4th Feb 2019

We've been learning how to calculate the area and perimeter of regular and compound rectangular shapes.  With a little colour, we were able to calculate the lengths of missing side, which in turn allowed us to split the compound shapes, calculating the area.

We used our knowledge of this, and our problem solving skills to work through two investigations on this topic.

In the first investigation, we looked at the relationship between area and perimeter.  Using online tools, we created regular and irregular shapes with the same numerical area and perimeter, with one measurement double the other, and as many shapes as possible with the same area but different perimeters or vice versa.  This was a great hands on investigation helping us to reinforce our learning.

Our second investigation was a real life situation.  We had to calculate the areas of the rooms in our resource area and choose carpet for each room.  We had different carpets to choose from and Mrs Gregg gave us a tight budget!  It was important that we justified our carpet choices, making sure that each type of carpet was suitable for the choose area.  Some of us felt that our parents/carers have a tricky time choosing carpet for our homes!
